Resetting devices too soon? Let’s talk about it.
Hi, I’m Kevin Mason, the founder of Lithgeek.com and MacMason.Tech, and I’ve spent years in tech support — including 8 years with AppleCare in California. Over that time, I’ve earned more than a dozen awards for customer service and technical excellence and even helped build entire tech support centers from the ground up.
So when I say some support agents are taking shortcuts by resetting devices instead of troubleshooting properly… I mean it.
Why We Don’t Just Hit “Reset”
In the rush to close support calls quickly, many agents perform a factory reset at the first sign of trouble. It’s fast, it’s easy, and it’s often the wrong thing to do.
Here’s the thing:
Good tech support isn’t about speed — it’s about care, clarity, and communication. That’s what we do differently at the Monkey Bar Help Desk at Lithgeek.
Our rules are simple:
- The customer should always understand what we’re doing and why.
- Backups come first. No exceptions.
- Risks are explained before any major changes.
- The tech — not the customer — must fully understand every step being taken.
You’d think these would be universal standards. Sadly, they’re not.
Real Stories from the Monkey Bar Help Desk
We’ve had several clients come to us after being let down by phone-based tech support.
One customer had a minor reception issue. Instead of checking the carrier status, their provider reset the entire phone — no backup, no iCloud login recovery, no warning. The problem wasn’t even the phone. It was the carrier outage. The result? All their data was lost.
Another client’s support agent “tweaked” settings to fix reception issues — but ended up locking the phone to reject all SIM cards. When it arrived at our Help Desk, we had to perform a full backup and system reset to recover functionality.
In both cases, we fixed the mess — but the real damage was the trust lost.
Why Lithgeek Is Different
At Lithgeek.com, we don’t see you as a ticket number.
