getting started with Warhammer 40k (aka Warhammer 40,000) is easier than you think. Swing by our friendly computer shop at 85 Main Street, Lithgow—just down the mountain—and we’ll kit you out with the basics, answer newbie questions, and swap veteran hobby tips. We’ve got items in stock right now, from paints to starter sets like Combat Patrol: Space Marines and Citadel Colour essentials.

The basic needs (Katoomba edition):

  1. A Starter Army or Box: Grab a Combat Patrol (Space Marines, Orks, or Necrons are great picks). Think of it as your fast pass to the grimdark. Even Roboute Guilliman would approve a tidy starting force.
  2. The Core Rules & Datasheets: Download the free core rules from the official site and learn the turn flow—move, shoot, charge, fight, score. Check the latest on the Warhammer homepage: https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/home.
  3. Dice, Range Ruler & Tokens: You’ll need D6s, a tape measure, and some objective markers. Orks say “more dice, more dakka.”
  4. A Play Surface & Terrain: A dining table works in a pinch. Add a few bits of terrain to make Katoomba’s valleys proud.
  5. Sprue Cutters & Knife: Clean assembly saves headaches later. The Emperor abhors mould lines.
  6. Primer: Chaos Black, Grey Seer, or Corax White—primer makes paint stick and colours pop.
  7. Paints & Brushes: A few Citadel Colour Base, Layer, and Contrast paints plus a medium and detail brush will carry you far. Nuln Oil for instant shadows, too.
  8. Palette (Wet is Best): Keeps paints workable so your Ultramarines’ edge highlights stay crisp.
  9. Varnish: Seal your army to survive transports, tabletop scuffles, and the odd Blue Mountains breeze.
  10. Good Lighting: A desk lamp beats cave painting in the Catacombs of Katoomba.
