This post isn’t for the hardcore Linux crowd. It’s for the everyday person who’s tired of paying for Windows or Office 365, frustrated with slow computers, and curious about trying something new. Linux can breathe life into your old machine — and we can help you get started.

A Quick Message to the Linux Geeks

Before we go any further — Linux pros, this post isn’t for you!
If you think sudo apt install kungfu && echo "I know kungfu" is hilarious, feel free to move along.

This one’s for the rest of us — the people who are a bit grumpy with Windows but still a little nervous about trying something new.

My Journey with Linux

I didn’t start out as a tech guy. I was an artist, just bored and broke.
One day, a podcast suggested trying a new operating system called Ubuntu. Back then, it took forever to download, and I ruined three CDs just trying to make it work.

At the time, Linux wasn’t exactly user-friendly — more like a puzzle wrapped in a mystery. But I stuck with it because I couldn’t afford expensive software and didn’t want to pirate anything.

Fast-forward to today: I use Linux and macOS about 50/50. Linux powers my programming work, my older laptops, and even my daily email and web browsing.

Why You Should Try Linux

1. You’ll Save a Ton of Money

I haven’t paid for an operating system or office software in over 15 years.
Many seniors we see at our shop pay yearly for Office 365 just to check their email. If you’re not using business tools like meeting scheduling or advanced features, there’s really no need. Linux offers free alternatives that do everything most people need.

2. It’s More Secure

Linux is known for strong built-in security. Most viruses and malware simply don’t work on Linux. Updates are frequent, and support for older systems lasts much longer than Windows. And if you do want extra protection, Linux has some of the same tools used by cybersecurity experts.

3. You’ll Get Tons of Free Software

Need to write a document, paint digitally, edit videos, or make music?
All free on Linux. Thousands of apps are available at no cost — and you can install them with just a few clicks.

4. That “Old” Computer Might Still Have Life Left in It

This is my favourite reason. Linux makes old computers feel new again.
Some versions can run with as little as 156 MB of RAM. That’s over 6,000 times smaller than what modern Windows computers often need.

So instead of tossing that old laptop, bring it to us — we’ll install a lightweight Linux version and show you how to use it.

A Few Honest Drawbacks

No Warranty

Unlike Apple or Microsoft, Linux isn’t tied to specific hardware. That means not everything will work perfectly on every machine. We can help install it and troubleshoot, but there’s no “official” warranty. It’s part of the trade-off for being free.

Not Everything Is Plug-and-Play

While most things work just like they do on Windows or Mac, some apps might take a bit of learning. If you’re not comfortable exploring new software, you’ll need a little patience — but we can teach you the basics.

Export, Don’t Just Send

When sharing files, you’ll sometimes need to export them to common formats like .doc or .pdf. It’s easy, but something to keep in mind when sending files to others.

Not Every Tech Can Help You

Fixing Linux problems can be tricky. Many techs simply don’t know it — not because they can’t learn, but because it’s a different world.
At Lithgeek, we specialise in Linux. We use it daily, create custom setup scripts, and can teach you how to get the most out of it.
