Here are the 10 essentials you’ll want to paint your Warhammer minis like a champ—whether you’re diving into Warhammer 40k or Warhammer 40,000 for the very first time, or you’re a grizzled veteran of the grimdark:
- Side cutters (sprue cutters): Cleanly snip parts from the sprue so you don’t start with gouges.
- Hobby knife & files: Tidy mould lines; the Emperor abhors burrs almost as much as heresy.
- Primer: A good spray base helps paint stick. Citadel Colour primers like Chaos Black, Grey Seer or Corax White are ace.
- Brushes: A small detail, a medium layer, and a larger base/wash brush will carry you from Guardsman to Primarch.
- Paints: Citadel Colour Base, Layer, and Contrast paints make life easier (Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade are still MVPs).
- Palette (ideally a wet palette): Keeps paints workable longer (perfect for edge highlights on your Space Marines).
- Water pot & paper towel: For thinning, rinsing, and fixing “oops” moments—because mistakes happen.
- Basing materials: Texture paints, sand, tufts—make your Adeptus Mechanicus look at home on Mars or your Orks on a muddy scrap world.
- Varnish/sealant: Protect that fresh scheme from the perils of the Warp (and gaming bags).
- Good lighting (and maybe a magnifier): Seeing details turns “blobby gold” into proper Aquilas.
We stock paints, brushes, primers and starter kits right now—yes, in stock—plus goodies like the Citadel Colour Starter Set and Combat Patrol: Space Marines. If you’re near Lithgow (home base at 85 Main Street), pop in; we’re friendly with new painters and seasoned heretics alike. From Katoomba to Bathurst, Leura to Oberon, Portland, Dubbo, Zigzag, Bilpin, Blackheath, and even Mellow Bath, you’re welcome to swing by for a yarn, a quick demo wash, or help matching that perfect Mephiston Red.
First time painting? No stress. Everyone splashes paint where it shouldn’t go. Clean it up, try again, and keep practising—never give up! Even Roboute Guilliman had to learn edge highlights sometime. And if you need a break from the brush, we’re also your local computer shop for gaming computers and phone repairs—grab parts, upgrade your rig, then get back to the hobby table.
