Right, before anyone says anything โ€” yes, I know it’s old. Yes, I know the graphics are dated. And no, I do not care. Fallout 3 is a brilliant game, and the idea that a title has to be brand new to be worth your time is, frankly, complete nonsense. A good game is a good game. Full stop.

I came into this one having already played Fallout 2, so I was comfortable with the classic turn-based combat style. When Bethesda made the switch to first and third-person perspective for Fallout 3, I’ll admit I was sceptical. That was my comfort zone they were messing with. But here I am, 10 hours in, hooked โ€” and only gaming on Wednesday nights.

What We Love About It

The storyline is genuinely excellent. And this game does something I’ve never seen done quite like this before โ€” it builds your character through an interactive introduction that starts from the moment you’re born. Yes, born. You crawl around as a baby learning the controls. It sounds ridiculous. It works perfectly. It’s creative, it’s clever, and it eases you into the world without feeling like a tutorial screen dump.

The world itself is rich and rewards exploration. Set 200 years after a nuclear war in the ruins of Washington D.C. โ€” now known as the Capital Wasteland โ€” there’s always something around the next corner. The characters you meet are memorable and often genuinely funny. The story has real momentum to it.

And here’s the controversial bit: the graphics. Yes, they’re dated. Very dated. The polygon counts are obvious, and some of the character faces look like someone pulled a stocking over their head before rendering them. But โ€” and this is important โ€” that puts it safely below the uncanny valley. Nobody’s trying to fool you into thinking these are real people. Someone worked hard with the technology they had at the time, and there’s a certain charm to it that modern hyper-realistic games just don’t have. It’s a vibe.

The game is also challenging enough to stay interesting without being punishing to the point of frustration. With only Wednesday nights to game, that balance matters a lot.

What Could Be Better

The SPECIAL stats system โ€” which governs your character’s Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck โ€” can get a bit vague. Some terms and values aren’t well explained in-game, and there’s no easy way to look things up mid-session without breaking your immersion and pausing to Google it. For a game this deep, a better in-game reference would go a long way.

What’s Challenging About It

For anyone who only gets one gaming session per week, Fallout 3 has a specific and very real challenge: remembering how to play it. Every Wednesday is a bit of a re-calibration. The controls, the menus, the combat flow โ€” your brain just needs a few deaths to click back in. It’s not a knock on the game, it’s just the reality of deep RPGs when you’re not playing every day.

About the Game

Fallout 3 was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released in October 2008, directed by Todd Howard, and is widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed games of that era. It’s the third major instalment in the Fallout series and the first developed by Bethesda after acquiring the franchise from Interplay Entertainment.

The game is set in the year 2277, 200 years after the Great War, in a region now known as the Capital Wasteland โ€” centred around the ruins of Washington D.C. Fandom

 • Fallout 4ย โ€” More action-focused but stunning open world.
 • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivionย โ€” Same developer, same era, same deep RPG energy.ย (And yes, there’s a remaster out now.)
 • The Outer Worldsย โ€” A spiritual successor that captures the Fallout feel brilliantly.
 • Disco Elysiumย โ€” If it’s story and character depth you’re after, nothing touches this.
 • Mass Effect Legendary Editionย โ€” Rich RPG storytelling in a sci-fi setting.
