PASSWORDS!!!

Passwords, pins, codes etc are the bain of everyones lives these days.

The number of passwords that we have is incredible. We need passwords for almost everything. And if its not a password then we need pin numbers too!

They Say:

  • Don’t use the same password / pin for everything.
  • Don’t write them down in a book.
  • Don’t have your computer browser save them for auto login.
  • Don’t tell others your passwords or pin number.

What We Do:

  • Write the password in a book (how else am I meant to remember them).
  • Have our browser save the password for autologin to webpages.
  • Use the same or very similar password to login to everything.
  • Use the same pin on all our debit/credit cards.
  • Or even use the pin for our cards for other logins too.
  • Or we just forget them all.

What Can We Do Then???

Well there are options out there that we can do.

We can use a program that remembers our passwords for all the webpage logins and email accounts. There are numerous ones out there that can be installed on the computer. Generally as part of its setup / installation it will ask you to create a ‘Master’ password. This password is one that you need to remember – or you will be in trouble. Then as you log into websites and accounts it will ask to learn your passwords. Some software will suggest passwords for you when a new account is created on a website.

There are many different programs for this and it is worth investigating which one suits your needs. I understand there are paid password managers and free password managers just waiting to be used.

Another option that you can do if you have a good memory for passwords is to come up with a method of creating your passwords so they can be modified to suit the need at the time, ie whether its an email account or website.

MOST IMPORTANT THING!!!

In my view as a Technician it is extremely important to remember the passwords for your accounts.

It can be frustrating for both repairer and customer when a password has been created so long ago that it has been forgotten. The issue then arises that the account is old and has not had the contact information updated ( we all forget to do this), so it has the old phone number linked to it or an old email address as its recovery email account. The outcome of this situation is that the customer loses access to the account and has to create a new account. Starting this process all over again.

So to end this I would ask you to please, please keep your information up to date for each account (at the very least your contact phone number) so that if you do forget your password we have a chance at fixing it for you.
