As many of you already know, I’m a long-time Apple user. I’ve worked at Apple, I train people on Macs, and I use Apple devices every day. That said, I’m not here to bash Android or Samsung phones. They can be great devices! But lately, I’ve seen a growing issue with some Android phones—especially Samsungs—that’s making me rethink how well they work for everyday users, especially those who aren’t tech experts.

Let’s talk about Ad Popup Swarms.

What is an Ad Popup Swarm?

An Ad Popup Swarm is what happens when you accidentally install an app that floods your phone with full-screen ads. These aren’t the little banner ads you might see at the bottom of a game. No—these are loud, full-screen, in-your-face ads that show up randomly. And I mean randomly—while you’re trying to answer a call, check the weather, or take a photo of the grandkids.

The worst part? These ads are often scary or misleading. Some say things like:

  • “Your phone has a virus!”
  • “You’ve been hacked!”
  • “Clean your phone now!”

These messages are designed to frighten you into downloading even more apps—which only makes the problem worse.

How It Starts

Usually, the problem starts when you download an app that seems helpful or fun. We’ve seen these swarms come from:

  • Free antivirus apps
  • Free Wi-Fi apps
  • Weather apps
  • Photo recovery tools
  • Flashlight apps
  • Even some free Bible apps (not because of the content, but because of the target audience)

These apps often look harmless—but behind the scenes, they’re designed to show ads or even install more ad-loaded apps without you knowing. Before long, your phone feels completely taken over.

How to Fix It

Here’s the good news: You can get rid of these ad swarms, but you need to take the right steps. Here’s what I recommend:

1. Do NOT Install Antivirus to Fix It

This is how many people end up in trouble in the first place. A lot of so-called “free antivirus” apps are part of the problem.

2. Remove Recently Installed Apps

Think about what you downloaded in the last week. If your phone started acting up recently, the app you installed around that time might be the cause. Be careful just randomly deleting apps… you might need them

3. Avoid Certain App Types

Be cautious with apps that claim to:

  • Clean your phone
  • Boost performance
  • Offer free virus scans
  • Provide free Wi-Fi
  • Recover deleted photos

Even if they sound useful, many of these are just traps for adware.

4. Ask for Help

If you’re unsure which apps are safe to remove, bring your phone into MacMason Training and Repairs. We can help you sort through it without judgment, and we’ll explain everything in plain English.
